Dear families and caregivers,

It was a great week at Laurelwood Public School. The Girls’ Volleyball Team won the championship over Margaret Avenue in five games. They communicated effectively on the court to ensure they played well. Special thank you to the coaches: Ms. Deluce, Mr. Summers, and Mr. Morton.

On Thursday, students are welcome to come to school in their favourite pyjamas or comfy clothes.

The last day of school for the 2022 year is on December 23. The school will reopen on January 9.

For our families celebrating Hanukkah – Wishing your family peace and light this holiday season. May the holiday light up your family’s lives with love.

Sincerely,

Andrea Michelutti, Proud Principal of Laurelwood Public School

Inclement Weather Update

When the buses are cancelled and the schools remain open, it is important to notify the office if your child will not attend school. Please call or email the school before 8:40 a.m. To support our staff arrival program, our secretaries need to connect families if their child is not at school or we did not receive communication.

Attendance Information

Please call or email the school when your child is late or absent.

Your child’s safety and well-being are an important concern for us, and ensuring your child arrives at school safely is a responsibility we take very seriously. That is why all elementary schools have a Safe Arrival Program to ensure that each student arrives safely.

Parents and guardians have a responsibility to contact the school when a child is late or absent.

You now have two ways to contact the school to report your child’s absence or late arrival:

  1.  Call Us – Our Attendance Line can be reached by calling 519-884-9999 and then dialling extension #1. Include your child’s name (and spelling), grade, class and reason for absence.

Or

  1. Email us – You can email lrw-attendance@wrdsb.ca and include the following information:
  • Subject Line: Student’s Name
  • Body of Email: Student’s name, grade, class, your name, and the reason for the absence.

Select the option that is most convenient for you. Both options are available 24/7.

Our staff, families, and caregivers are partners in every student’s learning journey. We appreciate your support in ensuring that every student arrives safely at school.

Fewer Distractions = More Learning

We would like to ask for your assistance in helping us implement our “Fewer Distractions = More Learning” policy at Laurelwood Public School. To make the best possible learning environment for all of our students, we ask parents to make arrangements with their children before the school day. When we receive calls regarding changes of plans or items being dropped off, classroom instruction is interrupted. We know that emergencies occur and we are here to support our students and their families. This is the best policy to promote learning for all students and reduce the number of interruptions during the school day.

We are experiencing a large volume of students being late; please remember that students are expected to be at their entry doors at 8:40 a.m. to ensure they can enter the school with their classmates. Thank you for your joint effort in creating the best learning environment for all our students.

Emergency Procedures

This week our fire alarm was activated but there was no concern for safety. After a walk-through with Waterloo Fire Rescue, our students were allowed to re-enter the building. We have several drills throughout the year to ensure our students and staff are safe. The students were extremely well-behaved, and their patience was appreciated.

Covid Testing Kits

We have additional Covid Testings kits available in the main foyer for families. If you need testing kits, please have your child visit the main foyer to pick one up. Families using our extended-day program also have access to these free kits.
